Everest No Filter
Right now on there are two bros in Tibet, Adrian Ballinger and Cory Richards, and they are climbing Mt. Everest and covering their entire adventure on Snapchat. I only just discovered the ‘EverestNoFilter’ Snapchat handle yesterday and already I’m completely hooked, I shit you not when I say that I’ve been glued to my phone ever since discovering what these bros are up to.
Adrian and Cory are Snapchatting their way up Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain in the world, in order to show the real side of Mt. Everest because 99.99% of all the images we ever see of Mt. Everest were curated to show a very pristine image of the mountain. These two bros are using Snapchat to give a very real look at the grittier side of Mt. Everest, eventually showing the dead bodies and human excrement that litters the mountain, but at the moment it’s still pretty fucking gorgeous.

This month, the two of us are going to Snapchat various parts of our journey to and up the north side of Everest. (My guide company, Alpenglow, moved to the north side of the mountain after the 2014 incident in the Khumbu Icefall that killed 16 Sherpas.) Along the way, we’ll post short videos and photos in real-time to depict an unfiltered look at an unfiltered climb during a crucial season on a changing Everest. We chose Snapchat because “snaps”—unlike posts to Instagram or Facebook—must be posted immediately from a phone’s camera. If we’re successful, you’ll have a complete chronicle of our journey.
While over 7,000 ascents of the mountain have been made with bottled oxygen, only 193 have been accomplished without, and Cory and I are going to try going without, too. While I’ve summitted six times, I’ve always done while guiding—and always with supplemental oxygen. Cory has climbed Gasherbrum II and Lhotse without oxygen, but has yet to reach the top of Everest.

Regardless of whether you’re celebrating 4/20 today, chances are that you’ve received at least one Snapchat from a friend using the new Bob Marley 4/20 filter. Now, I personally tend to err on the side of “You guys are being a bunch of fucking pussies” when it comes to people complaining about cultural appropriation, HAES, and other shit Tumblr cooked up one wild Saturday night that they spent in their parents’ basement. I get it, I understand it, but in 10 years no one is going to give a shit after the fad of being overly PC is over.
With that said, blackface is a different matter. That’s 100% racist, something that no one should do unless, of course, you are a racist who would like to openly identify as such. Yet somehow, SOMEHOW, the folks over at Snapchat didn’t think to themselves “Hm, you know what, maybe making a Bob Marley filter is a bad idea.” Granted, I understand that it wasn’t meant to be racist, but when you have a bunch of white people using a filter that meshes them with a black dude, you are basically creating the digital equivalent of black face:

As for Snapchat’s response to the controversy, a spokesman issued the following statement:
“The lens we launched today was created in partnership with the Bob Marley Estate, and gives people a new way to share their appreciation for Bob Marley and his music. Millions of Snapchatters have enjoyed Bob Marley’s music, and we respect his life and achievements.”
I mean, if his foundation okay’d it then whatever – to me, that should cancel out all the complaints about how Marley was more than just a dude who smoked a lot of weed. But as for the blackface complaints? Nah…it’s still totally racist.

Wentworth Maynard was struck by Christal McGee, a woman driving over 100 mph in order to take a Snapchat speed filter photo, on a highway near Atlanta, Georgia, and suffered permanent brain damage. McGee had three passengers in her Mercedes C320, however according to Metro there is “no information on injuries suffered by Christal McGee or her passengers.” Despite McGee’s unknown state, Maynard is now suing Snapchat, arguing that the filter “facilitated McGee’s excessive speeding” and “distracted her in the moments leading up to the crash.”:
The former Uber driver has been unable to work since the crash, the suit says.
McGee even took a snap after the crash, showing her in an ambulance under the caption ‘Lucky to be alive’.
The lawsuit also names McGee as a defendant and demands unspecified damages from Snapchat.(via)
Speaking to New York Daily News, one of Maynard’s attorneys, T. Shane Peagler, argues that “This is a product liability case because Snapchat put something very dangerous in the marketplace without any warnings or safeguards, and basically said, whatever happens, happens.”
You’d think common sense would be enough of a safeguard here, but if you’re determined to maim yourself and others then all intelligence goes straight out the window. Frankly, McGee should be the only one getting sued here – not Snapchat.
Snapchat has not issued a statement on the lawasuit, however they have added a warning to the speed filter telling users to not snap while driving. Tomorrow they will be also be adding the warning “Please, do NOT forget to breathe” on every filter since that’s important and god forbid someone not breathe and then file a lawsuit because Snapchat didn’t tell them one way or another.
As for McGee’s ambulance Snapchat…it’s a fucking doozy:
